Dental Exam
A comprehensive dental exam will be performed by Dr. Schmid at your initial dental visit. At your regular check-up exams, Dr. Schmid and/or one of our hygienists will include the following:
-
Examination of diagnostic x-rays (radiographs): Checkup x-rays are usually taken once a year. They are essential for the detection of decay, tumors, cysts, and bone loss. X-rays may also help determine tooth and root positions.
-
Oral cancer screening: Check the face, neck, lips, tongue, throat, tissues, and gums for any signs of oral cancer.
-
Examination for tooth decay: All tooth surfaces will be checked for decay.
-
Examination of existing restorations: Check current fillings, crowns, etc.
Professional Dental Cleaning
Professional dental cleanings (dental prophylaxis) may be performed by Dr. Schmid or by one of our Registered Dental Hygienists. Your cleaning appointment will include the removal of plaque and calculous from the teeth as well as polishing to remove any surface stain that may be present.
Calculous is hardened plaque that has been left on the tooth for some time and is now firmly attached to the tooth surface. Calculus forms above and below the gum line and can only be removed with special dental instruments. It will not come off with tooth brushing. Plaque is a sticky film that forms on and adhears to the teeth. It is made up of growing colonies of living bacteria and their biproducts of metobolism. These biproducts include toxins (poisons) that cause inflamation in the gums that may lead to gum (Periodontal) disease.
